How Fiddleheads Got Their Name

Long, long ago, when the forest was new, gentle fairies danced among the trees in northern Maine. Although the summers were delightful, the harsh winters made life difficult for delicate fairies.

With the help of Father Willow and the blessing of the gods, a young fairy named Fern learned to fill the forest with music to help pass the long winter nights.

This is the tale of how Fern blessed the forest with fiddle music, and it responded by sending up tightly coiled fiddlehead ferns each spring to remember her by.
